The American Dream has long been the North Star of our economic aspirations. It's the promise that with hard work and determination, each generation can build a better life than the last. A house to call your own, a quality education for your children, access to affordable healthcare—these are the pillars upon which this dream rests. But in recent years, that dream has been slowly eroded by a creeping tide of government overreach, reckless spending, and fiscal irresponsibility. The result is an economy that too often feels rigged against the very strivers and dreamers who power our prosperity.
Let's start with the elephant in the room: our ballooning national debt. Over the past two decades, both Republican and Democratic administrations have gone on spending sprees, racking up trillions in debt with no end in sight. In just the past two administrations alone, we've added a staggering $10 trillion to the national debt. That's not just an abstract number—it has real consequences for everyday Americans. As the debt grows, so too does the cost of servicing it. In 2024, we’ll spend over $800 billion just on interest payments. That's money that could have gone towards building infrastructure, investing in our children's future, or putting more dollars back in the pockets of hardworking taxpayers.
Think about GDP, the main way we measure the economy. For decades, it's been the ultimate indicator of economic health. When GDP goes up, the economy is supposedly thriving. But is it? GDP measures the total value produced in a country, including private and government spending, but it says nothing about how that wealth is spread out or the quality of that spending. For example, government spending on conflicts abroad can boost GDP, yet this doesn't necessarily reflect an improvement in the overall economic welfare of the population.
Same with unemployment. Each month, a new jobs report comes out and everyone analyzes the numbers. A dip in unemployment is celebrated as progress. But those headline numbers hide as much as they show. They ignore the millions who've given up on finding work, or are stuck in part-time or gig work when they want a steady full-time job. They don't tell us if the new jobs are good jobs with livable wages, benefits, and room for growth.
Countless government policies smother innovation, warp markets, and block paths to opportunity. From overregulation to backwards subsidies to monetary policies that fuel bubbles, the heavy hand of government meddling has put the American Dream on life support.
Owning a home has long been a cornerstone of middle-class prosperity. But today, home prices have soared to unprecedented heights, far outpacing wage growth. Why? Part of the answer lies in restrictive zoning laws and burdensome regulations that choke off the supply of new housing. By some estimates, regulatory costs now account for over 30% of the price of an average home. The result is a cruel game of musical chairs, with more and more families left without a seat when the music stops.
Over the past few decades, the price of college has exploded by over 1,200%, leaving an entire generation saddled with crippling student loan debt. What's driving this surge? Look no further than the flood of federal student aid, which has allowed colleges to hike tuition with impunity. It's a classic case of subsidies fueling inflation, and students are paying the price.
Some on the left vilify the wealthy, painting them as greedy fat cats who don't pay their fair share. But the reality is more nuanced. The top 1% of earners, those with adjusted gross incomes of $682,577 and above, paid approximately 50% of all federal income taxes. Meanwhile, the bottom 50% of taxpayers paid only 2.3% of all federal income taxes. These numbers underscore the folly of treating "the rich" as some monolithic enemy to be vanquished.
On the flip side, some on the right oppose any government action, even targeted fixes for real issues. Obsessing over small government makes them neglect healthcare, infrastructure, clean energy—things we need for long-term growth. For all their talk about fiscal restraint, the right has matched the left's reckless spending, ballooning the national debt. Not investing in education, wages, and climate change limits Americans' ability to thrive. The reality is, we need smart, lean government to enable the American Dream. That means updating the safety net to help those who fall on hard times, while still encouraging personal responsibility and self-reliance.
Sadly, our polarized politics have made common-sense reforms like this increasingly hard. Too many leaders care more about scoring political points than solving problems. They vilify opponents, pander to their base, and punt on tough decisions. The result is a paralyzed government that stumbles between crises, unable to tackle long-term challenges.
Reviving the American Dream will require all of us—left and right, companies and workers, rich and poor—to unite around a shared purpose. To have frank talks about the trade-offs and sacrifices we need to make for the greater good. To break free of ideological bubbles and reach across the aisle to compromise, like we used to.
None of this is easy. The allure of populist anger and tribalism is strong in these uncertain times. But the American Dream is worth fighting for. It's the promise that brought generations of strivers to our shores, the belief that here, anyone can make it if they try.
Let's gauge our economic progress not just with abstract stats, but by the daily lives of working families. Let's build an economy that doesn't just generate wealth, but spreads opportunity. And let's reaffirm our founding ideal—that in America, your starting point doesn't determine your end point.

Real Estate
As the world continues to evolve and technology advances, it's worth exploring how the real estate industry can adapt to better serve the needs of both buyers and sellers. One idea is the concept of self-guided home tours. Just as Airbnb has transformed the way we travel by allowing guests to check in and explore accommodations on their own, a similar model could be applied to the home-buying process. But before we dive in, let's consider the benefits and challenges for all parties involved.
For buyers, the advantages are clear. Self-guided tours would offer unparalleled flexibility and convenience, allowing them to view homes on their own schedule and at their own pace. No more rushing through a 15-minute showing or trying to coordinate multiple visits around the availability of an agent. With smart lockboxes and ID verification systems, buyers could securely access properties and take the time they need to really get a feel for the space. They could even bring along family or friends for a second opinion, without worrying about imposing on an agent's time.
But what about the sellers? For those who are still living in the home, the idea of strangers coming and going unsupervised may be unsettling. Privacy and security are valid concerns, and it's crucial that any self-guided tour system prioritizes these factors. However, with the right technology and protocols in place, these risks can be mitigated. Smart cameras can monitor the property during tours, and sellers can specify blackout dates or times when the home is off-limits. Plus, buyers would be required to provide identification, possibly a credit card and sign agreements outlining the terms of the tour, adding an extra layer of accountability.
On the flip side, self-guided tours could actually be a selling point for some homeowners. By offering this option, they can potentially attract a wider pool of buyers and generate more interest in their property. And for sellers who have already moved out or are selling a vacant home, self-guided tours could be a convenient way to allow more showings without the hassle of constantly prepping the space for visitors.
Of course, none of this is to say that real estate agents would become obsolete. While self-guided tours could handle the more routine aspects of the home-buying process, agents would still play a critical role in the high-stakes, high-touch elements. Their expertise in pricing, marketing, negotiation, and closing logistics is invaluable. In fact, by freeing up agents' time from mundane tasks like unlocking doors and sitting through endless showings, they can focus on what they do best: advising clients, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring a smooth transaction from start to finish.
Ultimately, the goal of introducing self-guided tours is to enhance the overall experience for both buyers and sellers. By leveraging technology to create a more efficient, flexible, and secure showing process, everyone stands to benefit. Buyers gain more autonomy and control over their search, sellers get more exposure for their listings, and agents can provide more targeted, high-value services to their clients.
As with any innovation, there will undoubtedly be challenges and growing pains along the way. But by working together and keeping an open mind, the real estate industry can adapt and evolve to better meet the needs of today's consumers. Just as Airbnb has become a trusted and beloved part of the travel landscape, self-guided tours could soon be a common and accepted part of the home-buying journey.
So let's embrace the possibilities and start exploring what the future of real estate could look like. With the right balance of human expertise and technological innovation, we can unlock new opportunities and create a more seamless, satisfying experience for everyone involved. The key to success lies in our willingness to adapt, collaborate, and always put the needs of our clients first.
