As a longtime member and current president of my local Lions Club, an intriguing topic often arises; the perceived decline in volunteerism among younger generations compared to our parents and grandparents. This notion, championed predominantly by older members, beckons a deeper investigation into its validity and the factors that might be influencing such a trend. Understanding the dynamics of volunteering across generations not only sheds light on social and cultural shifts but also holds implications for the future of community service and civic engagement.
At first glance, it seems plausible to assume that today's youth, growing up in a digitally-dominated and fast-paced world, might be less inclined towards traditional forms of volunteerism. This perception is bolstered by the noticeable decline in younger members within established service clubs and organizations. However, when one delves into the data and emerging trends, the narrative becomes less clear-cut and more nuanced.
Contrary to the assumption that young people are volunteering less, research, including findings from entities like the Corporation for National and Community Service, suggests that millennials and their successors are not shying away from community service. Instead, they are redefining what it means to volunteer and how to engage in social causes. The rise of digital platforms and social media has opened up new avenues for activism and philanthropy, allowing younger generations to contribute in ways that differ markedly from traditional methods.
This shift, however, doesn't imply a diminishment in the value or impact of their contributions. Young people today are often at the forefront of movements for social and environmental justice, harnessing the power of online platforms to mobilize resources and awareness. They may not be frequenting club meetings or signing up for long-term commitments as their predecessors did, but they are actively involved in cause-based campaigns, short-term projects, and digital activism.
Understanding this generational shift in volunteerism requires an appreciation of the broader socio-economic landscape that today's youth navigate. Economic pressures, including the rising costs of education and living, have significantly impacted the way younger generations allocate their time and resources. The reality of balancing education, career development, and financial stability leaves less room for traditional forms of volunteering, which often require a substantial time commitment.
Additionally, the cultural and societal environment in which young people are growing up today is very different. Exposed to a plethora of global issues and diverse perspectives, their worldview is inherently more expansive. As a result, their approach to volunteerism often transcends local community boundaries, focusing instead on national or global issues. This broadened outlook, while admirable, might lead to less visible involvement in local community initiatives, traditionally the bastion of service clubs and organizations, like the Lions Club.
Recognizing these shifts is crucial for traditional service organizations aiming to remain relevant and impactful. To engage younger generations, these organizations must adapt to the changing landscape. This could mean embracing technology to facilitate easier participation, aligning with contemporary causes that resonate with younger generations, or offering more flexible volunteering opportunities that accommodate their busy schedules.
While the societal landscape facing young professionals today differs from when our Lions Club’s veteran members entered the workforce, I believe the human spirit and resolve to contribute to one’s community remains strong across ages. The modalities may change with the times, but at our core we instinctively seek connection and wish to help others. We ought not pre-judge the character of emerging generations when empirical data tells an incomplete narrative.
Instead, let us foster intergenerational dialogue to illuminate societal factors shaping engagement, then collectively develop solutions so that the torch of service continues shining bright for decades to come. Our Millennial and Gen Z cohorts have much to gain from the wisdom and experience of veteran volunteers, just as longtime members can learn innovative approaches to community leadership from our young mentees. By embracing this vision, the spirit of service knows no age limit.
Artificial Imagination 🖌️
One of my favorite parts of starting a business or helping others start a business is logo design and developing the brand identity. The cool thing about AI is that it lets you brainstorm your ideas in real time. Don’t worry, Rachel, I’m not planning on launching any new businesses (today), but I did create this cool logo that would be fun to play with from a marketing perspective.

Vibe Hack ⏳
I'm changing the format from a weekly challenge to a weekly tip or hack that's been beneficial for me and might be for you too. This week's tip: the One-Minute Rule. Simply put, if you can finish a task in under a minute, do it right away. Whether it's shooting off a brief email or organizing your desk, this approach helps keep things efficient and clutter-free.
My Weekly Vibe
Journal: The One Line a Day: A Five-Year Memory Book is a journal designed for capturing daily memories over a five-year period. Each page is dedicated to a specific date, with space for a brief entry each year. This format allows for reflecting on the same day across different years, offering a unique way to observe changes and growth over time. It's a compact, simple way to maintain a long-term diary without the commitment of extensive daily writing. Rachel is on year two and I just started. It’ll be fun to look back on this in five years as life progresses.
Headset: If you’re on the phone as much as me, these headphones are a solid, budget-friendly choice. So far, they have been a durable and reliable alternative to more expensive options like AirPods, which I've noticed tend to break down over time. The noise-cancelling microphone delivers clear sound quality, making it ideal for office use or remote work while multitasking. They’ve been a game changer for me, so l suggest giving them a try.
Podcast: I've previously shared my slight obsession with the Founders Podcast, and the latest episode dives into the life of the iconic Oprah. Her story is a fascinating journey that began with a troubled and sorrowful childhood. Her resilience in the face of adversity is a critical part of her narrative, showcasing how she overcame these early challenges. The Queen of Interviews turned these early hardships into one of the most extraordinary media careers in history. It's a tale that is both inspiring and insightful, and is undoubtedly worth a listen for its depth and motivational lessons.
Sugar: We all know sugar is bad and most alternatives are also bad, but I stumbled upon some research about a sugar replacement called allulose. It is a natural "rare sugar" found in foods like figs and maple syrup, is a standout sweetener for those that have a sweet tooth but also crave healthy, clean eating. It's low in calories, doesn't spike blood sugar and is keto-friendly, making it an excellent choice for a variety of dietary needs. Unlike artificial sweeteners, allulose has a more natural taste, without the intense sweetness or aftertaste of options like Stevia or Monk Fruit. This makes it ideal for those seeking healthier alternatives without compromising on flavor.

Real Estate
One of the biggest costs for homeowners and real estate investors is the energy required to power a modern home. However, the future is bright for solar power. Recent innovations in solar panel technology and battery storage solutions are paving the way for a solar-powered revolution in how we light and power our homes.
Traditional solar panels are steadily becoming more efficient and affordable. Companies are developing flexible thin-film solar panels that can adhere directly onto surfaces like windows or roof shingles. This simplicity cuts down on installation costs and expands options for placement. Even trailers and RVs can easily be solar-powered with these lightweight, versatile panels.
New solar roof shingles mimic the look of conventional roofing materials while discretely embedding solar cells to capture energy from sunlight. These solar shingles can directly power homes without the visible panels, transforming rooftops into clean energy sources. Entire neighborhoods may soon have rooftops covered in solar shingles, enabling self-sustaining community solar grids.
Advancements in battery capacities also enable solar system owners to store excess electricity for use anytime, not just when the sun is shining. Tesla's Powerwall home battery packs can power homes during grid outages and overnight. With sufficient battery storage, homes can potentially achieve complete energy independence from the grid.
Artificial intelligence and smart tech will also help optimize solar energy capture and distribution. Smart sensors can track sunlight and adjust panel angles for maximum exposure. Energy monitoring systems can track usage habits and control devices to reduce waste.
Within a decade, innovations in solar and battery storage technology promise to transform households into self-sustaining microgrids. Entire suburban communities could produce their own clean power through shared neighborhood solar grids networked to battery banks. So, in the not-too-distant future, we may all enjoy bright, sun-powered homes independent of the traditional energy grid. The future of residential solar power is looking very bright indeed.

In the exxagerated voice of Jim Gaffigan…. “Well lookey here! We got ourselves a nice lil' shack going for the modest price of $17.5 million smackeroos! Hot diggity dog! For that kinda dough, this place better have a chocolate fountain in every room. And I'm not talkin' that weak Willy Wonka nonsense either. It better be flowing with piping hot melted Lindt! But the real kicker is this "artfully executed" floor plan. You hear that?? It's ART! Picasso ain't got nothing on gray square living room next to gray square dining room! It's architectural genius I tell ya! And agelessly modern? I guess that means even babies in diapers can appreciate all the right angles. It's a flipping architectural miracle! Hallelujah! So for the price of a small island nation, you too can own this hoity toity haute couture house with all the fancy architect-y bells and whistles! It's practically a steal!” (courtesy of Washington Fine Properties, LLC)

Interesting Find
Remember when those wheely shoes were all the rage? Well, one company is reviving that trend for adults with Moonwalkers X - high-tech electric skates. These slick 6-wheeled skates strap onto normal shoes, allowing you to effortlessly drift down sidewalks without ever breaking your stride. The price is expected to land around $2,000, but whatever the damage, floating down the street on lightning-quick wheels does look fun. Hovering somewhere between genius invention and wacky gimmick, one thing’s certain—I’d wear them 😂
